EGGS-TREMELY WET SPELL CANT DAMPEN THE SPIRIT OF EASTER
New York’s faithful face a moist but busy Easter and Passover weekend.
“The forecast is wet,” said Gary Conte, meteorologist for the National Weather Service. “Despite the inclement weather, enjoy your holiday season.”
And many New Yorkers will do just that.
Today’s rain won’t spoil the annual Kmart Easter Eggstravaganza from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Central Park, the Parks Department said.
Call 888-NYPARKS for information on the Easter-egg hunt and egg-rolling competition.
Showers will continue tomorrow as Christians observe Easter, when worshipers around the world celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Pope John Paul II, who heard the confessions of 10 people in St. Peter’s Basilica on Good Friday yesterday, will conduct his traditional, open-air Mass tomorrow, offering greetings in more than 50 languages.
Starting around 11 a.m. – after Mass without the ailing John Cardinal O’Connor ends at St. Patrick’s Cathedral – New York’s unofficial Easter Parade will hop along Fifth Avenue between 49th and 57th streets.
Commuters, take note: Traffic will be closed on the route between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The sun should break through the clouds by midafternoon, with temperatures hovering around the 60-degree mark.
Meanwhile, Jews continue to observe Passover, the eight-day religious festival that commemorates the Exodus of Israelite slaves from Egypt more than 3,000 years ago.
